Migraine is a common condition that can cause attacks of bad headaches, often felt as severe throbbing pain on one side of the head. You may also feel sick or actually be sick.
If you think you or a dependent is suffering from migraine, or that it is getting worse, speak to a healthcare professional who will be able to provide any help and support you may need.
Read on to find out more about what migraine is, the symptoms, and how it can be diagnosed, managed and treated.
Migraine is not simply a term for a bad headache. It is a particular medical condition that can cause headaches, but also other symptoms, including feeling or being sick, problems with your sight, or sensitivity to sound, light or smells. Indeed, some migraine sufferers do not get migraine headaches at all. Migraine headaches are also different from other types of headache in that they are generally more painful and disabling.
Migraines often last from as little as 2 hours up to 3 days. How often people get them also varies a great deal.
People with migraine often have warning signs (called an aura) that can last up to an hour before an attack. This is type of migraine is called a migraine with aura.
If no aura is experienced, this is called a migraine without aura.
If no migraine headache occurs, but other symptoms such as flashing lights are experienced, this is called a migraine aura without headache, or silent migraine.
Migraine may also be called episodic if symptoms occur on fewer than half the days in a month, and chronic if they occur on at least half of all days in a month.
Migraine is a common condition. Research shows that around 10 million adults in the UK have migraine. The number of children who suffer from migraine is unclear but may affect between 3% and 10% of all children in the UK. In 2016, it was the third largest cause of ill health in the UK.
Migraine affects two to three times as many women as men and is more common in people of working age.
Everyone experiences migraine differently. The symptoms can vary from one person to the next.
A migraine is divided by doctors into four stages. Not all patients experience all of these stages and each stage may have different symptoms.
Prodrome
The migraine prodrome is the very first part of a migraine and the symptoms can last hours or days. It is experienced by most patients, although not all may realise this. Some just somehow know that an attack is coming.
Common symptoms include:
Aura
Aura symptoms, or warning signs, are experienced by around a quarter of people with migraine. They can last up to an hour.
Common symptoms include:
Migraine attack
This is the headache part of a migraine, which people are most familiar with. Headaches caused by migraine last from a few hours to several days (if they are untreated).
Migraine headaches are usually felt as throbbing moderate or severe pain on one side of the head. Often, they are made worse by simple movement, and sufferers also become very sensitive to bright lights or loud noise. Feeling sick or vomiting are also common.
Sufferers often want to sleep off the migraine attack in a dark room.
Migraine hangover (postdrome)
This recovery phase of a migraine often feels similar to a hangover caused by too much alcohol and can last several hours to a few days
We still don’t what causes migraines. An old theory was that migraines are caused by changes in blood flow inside the brain, but nowadays it is thought that changes in chemical levels in the brain are responsible. These changes may cause abnormal brain signals and these, in turn, cause migraine symptoms.
You are also more likely to get migraines if someone else in your family gets migraines, but this family connection is also not well understood.
Migraine triggers
Some people find certain things can set off migraines, such as:
If you have migraine, it is diagnosed based on your symptoms and medical history as there is no test that can confirm it. Your doctor may perform a neurological exam and other tests, but this is to rule out other causes of your symptoms.
It is important to remember that the symptoms of migraine come and go. If they do not go, your symptoms are probably caused by something else.
You might be offered various medicines to manage your migraine. These can include simple painkillers, medicines to stop you feeling or being sick, and specific migraine medications.
You may have to try out a few of these medicines to see what works for you.
Remember, taking painkillers too often can actually cause headaches. However, medicines taken to stop migraine attacks (which are different to painkillers) must be taken every day. They may not stop all attacks but are likely to make them less severe and less frequent.
To help manage your migraine, a GP may also suggest changing your lifestyle, avoiding triggers, and ways to reduce stress.
